Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a form of alcohol abuse. This refers to a pattern of drinking that is considered to have an increased or high risk - meaning it is very likely to cause harm to your health.

Alcoholism is thought to increase the risk of Depression, Dementia, Hallucinations, Personality breakdown, Memory loss, Blackouts, Mood swings, Decreased sex drive and Suicidal thoughts.

Addiction is enormously controlling. It can control a person's thoughts and determine their actions. It can take over a personality and change the direction of a person's life and this can be very distressing for partners, spouses, children, friends and family members.

To take the first step towards recovering from alcohol dependence and for someone to admit they have a problem is very brave. Someone with an addiction can convince themselves that they haven’t a problem but unfortunately these patterns of thought can be unhealthy and that person may be more likely to inflict damage to themselves or others.

Using various counselling theories for alcoholism treatment can be effective. Looking at the person’s thinking and behaviour in an attempt to crack their emotional or psychological habits.
